Title: Classifying Angles & Shapes
Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Pre Planning
Big Idea(s):
Essential Questions:
Objective(s):
Summative Assessment:
Students will be assigned a math test on the topic of geometrical shapes and angles. Use this test to measure students’ skills and proficiency on the subject matter.:
Lesson Opening
Students will grab an iPad from the cart and open up the iTooch Elementary School App. This is an educational app, which grabs students interest and is a fun way for students to practice and learn Math. There’s a library of several content areas for different grade levels. Students will choose “Math Grade 3” (age 8-9) and they will choose the topic “Geometry”. They can then view a lesson summary on geometrical shapes and angles. Students can then answer practice questions based on what they’ve learned and It also allows them to take a test to assess themselves on the topic.
Lesson Body
Explanation:
The students will now open up the app Geometry 4 Kids. This is a well designed app developed to teach a plethora of geometrical concepts. The App contains learning modules that explain each concept clearly, with illustration and narration that can be followed with ease. There are also practice modules that lets the students practice at their own pace.
Check for Understanding:
The students will move on to another app called Third Grade Splash Math Games. This App will test the students knowledge of the concepts. It’s a comprehensive tool that helps kids practice and strengthen a wide range of math skills and it focuses on geometry. Its very helpful in that if you get the answer wrong it will provide you with the correct answer. That way you’re not practicing incorrectly. It’s a self-paced math program that’s challenging enough to keep the students motivated.
Extended Practice:
The students will get more practice by applying content related concepts and using the Math Geometry App. This app will aid students in enhancing logical reasoning and deductive thinking for modeling abstract problems. It will cover all the concepts in the objectives, such as 2D/3D shapes and their properties, Angles and Triangles.
Closing
The students will be tasked with creating a project. They will be using Geoboard and Google Slides on the iPad. The students will open Geoboard and the teacher will have them create line segments and polygons by stretching bands around the Geoboard’s pegs. Students will then create 3 different polygons. They will then screenshot each of the 3 polygons they create. They will then open up Google Slides and create a slideshow presentation. They will insert the images/screenshots of their polygons into individual slides. They will then write the attributes and properties about each one of their polygons. Once completed they should have successfully produced a Google Slides presentation project that integrates the lesson concepts.

Title: Classifying Angles & Shapes
Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Pre Planning
Big Idea(s):
- Geometric shapes of different dimensions and their properties can be described mathematically.
- Geometric shapes have certain properties that can be moved, compared, measured, and represented.
Essential Questions:
- Why is geometry important?
- How can geometry be used to solve real-world problems and situations?
Objective(s):
- Students will explore, identify, compare and analyze the meaning of angles and shapes.
- Students will name and identify right, acute, and obtuse angles.
- Students will be able to describe and classify the categories of 2D and 3D shapes.
- Students will be able to define, name and draw line segments.
